Weslaco, Tex. – Services for Mildred Snodgrass, 72, formerly of Newton and Estherville, were held Monday at United Methodist Church, Newton with interment in the Newton Union Cemetery. She died March 12, 1986 at Mid Valleye Baptist Hospital, Harlingen, Tex.Mildred Ruth Swalwell was born July 18, 1914 in Jasper County, the daughter of James W. and Carrie (Miller) Swalwell. She attended Baxter School where she was a 1933 high school graduate. She was united in marriage with Viggo Balmer who died in 1965. During their marriage they owned and operated Balmer Nursing Home. After his death she moved to Newton and in 1978 moved to Texas. She married Wilbur Snodgrass on Sept. 29, 1956 at Newton.
Survivors include her husband Wilbur Snodgrass, Weslaco, Tex.; three sons James Balmer, Newton; Jack Balmer, Marrietta, Ga. And Jerry Balmer, Cumming, Ga.; two granddaughters; one brother Wayne Swalwell, Newton; two sisters: Mrs. Ray (Bonnie) Eilert, Newton and Mrs. Grace Kleen, Estherville.
She was preceded in death by her first husband Vigo Balmer; and two brothers. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, March 18, 1986)
