Mrs. Emma [Davis] Wittern, who has been a resident of this county for the past twenty-four years, passed away at the home of her daughter in Des Moines, on last Sunday [September 24, 1916] evening at nine o’clock. She had not been in the best of health for some time past but her illness was not considered of a serious nature. She had for the past six years been living with her son, Chas. Wittern, of this city, and only a few months ago decided to visit with her daughter in Des Moines. Last week she decided to return here, but was taken sick and taken to the hospital there. The children were notified of her illness and before any of them had time to reach her, word was received of her death.

Mrs. Wittern has been a resident of Estherville for over twenty years and has many acquaintances here. The funeral services will be held in the German Lutheran church on next Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock, the Rev. Andreae officiating. The interment will be made in Oak Hill cemetery. Several of the children are here; some, however, were at a distance and it was impossible for them to reach here in time for the service. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, September 27, 1916)

Note: per daughter, Henerette’s marriage record, Emma’s maiden name was Leefen. Per her husband’s obituary, her name was Davis.
