August H. Wittern was born Feb. 12, 1889 in Germany and died at Estherville, Iowa, March 23, 1923 at the advanced age of 84 years, 1 month and 10 days. He was reared in the Lutheran faith. He came to America when a young man and was married to Miss Emma Davis, who after many years of faithful service to her husband, children and church, to which she was a devoted member, preceded him in death about six years.

Deceased has been a resident here 25 years. He was known to be a very honest man in all affairs, and kind and good-hearted. He leaves to mourn his death five sons, August of Sioux City; Chas., of Estherville; Harry of Nucla, Calif.; John of Little Rock, Iowa and William of Long Beach, Calif. Two daughters, Mrs. Etta Nichols of Boone and Mrs. Geo. Sikes of Ellsworth, Minn.

Funeral services were conducted on Wednesday afternoon from the Free Methodist church, by the pastor, assisted by Rev. S.K. Wheatlake of Denver, Colo., and Rev. and mrs. LeRay McDowell of Ruthven in song. Interment was made in Oak Hill cemetery. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, March 28, 1923 / Estherville Democrat, Estherville, IA, March 28, 1923)
