Arthur Valen Estherville Farmer, Dies
Arthur Valen, 63, Estherville farmer, died at 8:30 a.m. today at Holy Family Hospital. He had been in failing health since autumn of 1963.

Family funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Estherville Lutheran Church, followed by a public service at 2 p.m. Burial will be in Estherville Lutheran Cemetery.

Friends may call at Reese-Henry Funeral Home after 10 a.m. Friday and until noon on Saturday when the casket will be taken to the church. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, May 1, 1967)

Services set Saturday for Arthur Valen
Arthur Valen, 63, died at 8:30 a.m. Thursday at Holy Family Hospital. He had been in failing health since 1963.

Mr. Valen was born Jan. 2, 1904, on a farm near Huntington, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Arnt Valen. He received his education in rural Estherville schools, attended Waldorf Academy and Junior College, and received his B.A. degree at St. Olaf College at Northfield, Minn., in 1932.

He was married Nov. 24, 1932, to Esther Hanson at Winnebago Church south of Lake Mills.

He had farmed northeast of Estherville since his marriage. He had been active in community and agricultural affairs and had sung in the Estherville Men’s chorus many years.

He was baptized and confirmed in Palestine Lutheran Church and held many offices there. At the time of his death, he was a member of Estherville Lutheran Church, where he served on the board of deacons and the board of education.

Surviving are his wife; six daughters, Mrs. John (Elizabeth) Isder, Estherville; Mrs. Charles (Dorothy) Raney, Pensacola, Fla.; Mrs. Ronald (Mary) Petersen, Harris; Mrs. Charles (Barbara) Mull, San Diego, Calif.; Mrs. Glen (Katherine) Roberts, Sylvis, Ill.; Ladonna Valen, Albert Lea, Minn.; one son, Donald, at home, and 13 grandchildren.

He also has three brothers, Gust and Lewis of Estherville, and Rev. Elmer Valen of Sargeant, Minn.; and thre sisters, Mrs. Nels Walen, Ida Valen, and Mrs. Norman Beastrom of Estherville.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, and one brother.

Family services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Estherville Lutheran church, followed by public services a 2 p.m., Rev. Roy Hendricksen officiating. Burial will be in Estherville Lutheran cemetery. Friends may call at Reese-Henry Funeral Home until noon on Saturday. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, May 12, 1967)
