Lewis Valen Rites Monday
Services for Lewis Valen, 76, Estherville, who died of a stroke Aug. 17, 1972, at Good Samaritan Center, were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday.

The Rev. Stephen Engelstad and the Rev. Oscar Egebretson presided over the rites held at Estherville Lutheran Church. Richard Will was soloist and Mrs. Arthur Voetmann organist.

Mr. Valen was born March 17, 1896, in Emmet County to Arndt and Mary Lear Valen. After graduating from Emmet County High School, he attended Waldorf College. He was married to Isabelle Tweedt in Huxley on Oct. 20, 1920. They farmed in Ellsworth Township until moving into Estherville in 1952. He was county assessor in Ellsworth Township for a number of years.

Mr. Valen was baptized and confirmed in Palestine Lutheran Church, Dolliver, and transferred his membership to Estherville Lutheran Church when they took up residence here. He was also a veteran of World War I.

Survivors include three sons, Laverne, Robert and Jams, all of Estherville; two daughters, Mrs. Arvin (Shirley) Juhl, Estherville, and Mrs. Don (Arlene) Bygness, Sac City; 16 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Gust, of Estherville and the Rev. Elmer Valen of Sargeant, Minn.; and two sisters, Mrs. Emma Walen, Ida Valen and Mrs. Alma Beastrom, all of Estherville. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two brothers and two sisters.

Honorary pallbearers were Coleman Karlsven, R.S. Knutson, John Stanerson, Lloyd Olson, Ole Refsell and John Johnson. Active pallbearers were Allen Birkland, Donald Valen, Archie Sunde, Vernon Tweedt, Harland Bergeson and Robert Levell. Reese-Henry Funeral Home of Estherville was in charge of arrangements.
