First City Fatality of 1972
Tendal Killed in Cycle Accident
Estherville recorded its first traffic fatality since May 28, 1971, when Arnold Ray Tendal was killed when his motorcycle struck a guywire extending from a utility pole on South Eighth Street at 7:18 p.m. Friday [November 24, 1972].

Services for Mr. Tendal were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 27, 1972, at the Estherville Lutheran Church with interment in the Estherville Lutheran Cemetery.

Mr. Tendal, a senior in Estherville High School, was employed by Wadco Foods in Estherville.

He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Tendal of Estherville; six brothers, Donald at Fort Leonard Wood, James, Lars and Kenneth of Estherville and Robert and Paul at home; two sisters, Mrs. Robert (Diane) Fisher of Estherville and Eunice at home; and one grandparent, Mrs. Lars Tendal of Estherville.

Services were performed by the Rev. Stephen Engelstad and the Rev. Oscar Engebretson. Pallbearers were Larry Crees, Lonny Thorsland, Steven Smith, Dennis Fisher, Gary Theesfeld and Gene Fisher.

Tendal, riding a 1973 Honda, had entered South Eighth Street from Second Avenue South when he lost control of the motorcycle, went over the cur and struck the guywire. The cycle came to a stop 13 feet south of the point of impact. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, November 27, 1972)
