RAYMOND SUNDE
ESTHERVILLE - Funeral services for Raymond T. Sunde, 84, of Estherville, Emmet County, Iowa, will be held at 11 a.m., on Monday, May 3, 2004, with Pastor Susan Stone officiating. Interment will be held at Estherville Lutheran Cemetery in Estherville, Emmet County, Iowa. He passed away on Thursday, April 29, 2994, at Avera Holy Family Hospital in Estherville, Iowa.

Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m., on Sunday, May 4, 2004, at Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Chapel, Estherville.

Raymond Theodore Sunde, the son of Nels and Ingeborg (Tendal) Sunde was born June 28, 1919 in Estherville, Emmet County, Iowa.

He received his education in the Estherville schools graduating from Estherville High School in 1937.

After graduating from high school, Ray was employed at Lyman Oil Company in Estherville where he drove a gasoline transport cross-country for a few years. He enlisted in the United States Army Air Force and served during World War Two. He was stationed in the Pacific Theatre. Ray was awarded three Bronze Stars during his tour of duty. After his honorable discharge from military service, he returned to Estherville. On January 31, 1947, he was united to Waneta Summers at the First Presbyterian Church in Ringsted, Emmet County, Iowa. The couple made their home in Estherville where they raised their family and Ray was employed at Motor Supply Company for seventeen years. In 1965, Ray and Waneta opened and owned Ray's Farm Store in Estherville and operated it until 1983 when they retired. In his leisure time, Ray enjoyed playing golf, watching sporting events, especially baseball and playing cards with his buddies. He most especially enjoyed spending time with his family.

He was a member of Estherville Lutheran Church. Ray also was a lifetime member of VFW Post 3388 and American Legion Post 91 in Estherville. He was a previous member of the Elks Club.

Left to cherish Ray's memory are his wife, Waneta of Estherville; two sons, Steve Sunde and his wife, Sandra of St. James, Minnesota, Scott Sunde and his wife, Natalie Fobes of Seattle, Washington; five grandchildren, Berit Morse and her husband Charles of Golden Valley, Minnesota, Maren Viland and her husband Darren of Fairbault, Minnesota; Kristina Sunde of Madison, Wisconsin; Virginia Sunde of Seattle, Washington, Phoebe Sunde of Seattle, Washington; two great-grandchildren, Grace and Maggie Viland of Fairbault, Minnesota, two sisters, Alice Mitchell of Amana, Iowa, Nina Sill of Fairmont Minnesota; brother Merle Sunde of San Jose, California; sister-in-law, Edna Sunde of Fenton, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding Ray in death were his parents; one brother, Lloyd; and one sister, Lillian. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, May 1, 2004)
