Estherville – Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Estherville Lutheran Church for Eugene I. Helle, 67, who died at his home here Feb. 14. The Rev. Kermit Rye will officiate with burial to follow in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Home. Military rites will be conducted by the Estherville VFW and American Legion posts.

Mr. Helle was born Oct. 26, 1920, at Gillette, Wyo, the son of Peter and Clara J. (Hanson) Helle. He was educated at Wildrose, N.D. after his family moved there when he was 4, and graduated from Rush City, Minn., High School in 1939 after his family moved there when he was 16.

After his father’s death, Mr. Helle farmed and helped raise his younger brother. He served in the U.S. Air Forces during World War II from 1944 to 1946.

After his marriage to Maxine Trumble at St. Paul, Minn. Oct. 24, 1947, he moved to Colorado, passed a Civil Service Test, and became employed by the Soil Conservation Commission. He was a Soil Conservation Technician in Estherville from 1948 until he retired.

Mr. Helle was a member of the Estherville Lutheran Church, a life member of the VFW here, and served as president and board member of the Isaac Walton League.

He also served as a Scoutmaster for the Boy Scout Troop, was a member of the Northwest chapter of the Archeology Society at Cherokee, and a member of the Iowa State Archeology Society. He collected Indian arrowheads and rock formations.

Mr. Helle suffered from polycystic kidney dialysis treatment for 17 years, and was the first Veterans Administration sponsored home kidney dialysis patient.

He is survived by his wife, Maxine, of Estherville; two sons: Harold Helle and wife Diane, and Greg Helle of Estherville; two daughters, Kim of Estherville, and Pamela (Mrs. Francis) Johnson of Janesville, Minn.; two brothers: Charles Helle of Grants Pass, Ore., and LeRoy and wife Delores Helle of Red Oak; a sister, Mrs. Eugene Hawkinson, San Diego, Calif.; and 6 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, February 15, 1988)
