Estherville – Funeral services for Lester K. Handeland, 73, of Estherville will be held at 2 p.m. on Tues., Aug. 11, 1998, at the Estherville Lutheran Church with Pastor Arlyn Norris and Pastor Jane Johnson officiating. Interment will be at Estherville Lutheran Cemetery. He died Friday at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.

Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Monday at the Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Home in Estherville.

He was born on July 1, 1925 at Radcliffe, the son of Elmer and Bertha (Knutson) Handeland. He was baptized and confirmed at Salem Lutheran Church near Radcliffe. The family later moved a farm near Ellsworth. He received his education in the Ellsworth schools, graduating from Ellsworth High School in 1943. He attended Waldorf College. In 1948 he moved to Story City. He farmed and was employed at Munson’s Garage. On August 27, 1949, he was united in marriage to Laurentia Mae Lund at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Story City. After their marriage, they moved to Radcliffe and then to Omaha, Neb. where he attended trade school for refrigeration and air condition. In 1958, they moved to Spencer and he was employed by Champion Thompson Refrigeration. They moved to Estherville in 1962 where he was employed by Blass-Kent Refrigeration until 1965. He worked for Holy Family Hospital for 18 ½ years and retired in 1983 after his health failed.

He was a member of the Estherville Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his wife, Laurentia of Estherville; sons, Mark of Estherville and David of Estherville; daughters, Mrs. Ken (Mary) Kotewa of Fairmont, Minn.; Kathy Handeland of Spencer; Mrs. Tracy (Ann) Kuiper of Spencer; nine grandchildren; sister, Arlie Swenson of Story City and Mrs. Harry (Norma) Grandup of Nevada.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and one sister. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, August 8, 1998)
