1925-1977
Estherville – Services for Richard L. Grethen, 52, rural Estherville, will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Estherville Lutheran Church with the Rev. Stanley Eyberg officiating. Interment will be in the Estherville Lutheran Cemetery.

Mr. Grethen died Aug. 30, 1977, at his farm home.

Friends may call at Henry and Olson Funeral Home here until noon Thursday and at the church parlor prior to services.

He was born Aug. 11, 1925, at Ayrshire, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Grethen. He was educated in Cylinder schools and married to Helen Masanger Feb. 22, 1947, at Depew.

The couple farmed in the Graettinger area following their marriage until moving to a farm southwest of Estherville in 1961.

Mr. Grethen was a member of the Estherville Lutheran Church, Estherville Veterans of Foreign Wars post, Graettinger American Legion post, and Elks Lodge.

He is survived by his wife, Helen, Estherville; one daughter, Mrs. Paul (Connie) Love, Estherville; two sons, Jerry Grethen and Roger Grethen, both of Estherville; four grandchildren; four sister, Mrs. Duane Smith, Fort Dodge, Mrs. Robert Nock, Ringsted, Mrs. Bud Hefty, Luverne, and Mrs. Norman Wagner [Wegener], Graettinger; and two brothers, Robert Grethen, Emmetsburg, and Orville Grethen, Santa Clara, Calif.

Mr. Grethen was preceded in death by his parents and one sister. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, August 31, 1977)
