Estherville – Funeral services will be held at the Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Home here at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday for Thankful Van Valkenburg, 95, of Estherville, who died Sunday at Good Samaritan Center.The Rev. Richard C. Mavis Jr. of Union Baptist Church will officiate and visitation will be from 3:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.
Thankful Van Valkenburg was born Nov. 24, 1892, in Estherville to John and Viola (Wilbur) Lucas. She attended the Estherville schools through high school and also studied at the Chicago Hairdresser’s School. She was married to Ray Van Valkenburg Feb. 25, 1913.
She worked at the Hanson Tailor Shop in Estherville before her marriage. After their marriage, the couple moved to Chicago where they lived for a few years before returning to Estherville to spend the rest of their lives.
The deceased operated her own beauty shop her for a number of years. She also was a member of Union Baptist Church, the VFW Auxiliary, the Order of Eastern Star, and the White Shrine.
No immediate survivors of the family survive her. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, seven brothers and two infant sisters. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, January 25, 1988)
