Mrs. John Sytsma Dies
Funeral services for Mrs. John Sytsma of Jackson, Minn., former resident of the Graettinger area for several years, will be held today at 1:30 p.m. at the Methodist Church in Jackson. The Rev. Cecil Morris will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery at Estherville. Sathe and Son Funeral Home in Jackson had charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Sytsma died Saturday [March 5, 1960] at 10:30 a.m. at her farm home north of Jackson. She had been ill of cancer for two years.

Mrs. Sytsma was born June 17, 1889, in Marion county, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph McCombs, and received her education in Marion county schools. She and John Sytsma were married march 28, 1907, at Knoxville, and farmed in Marion county for several years before moving to a farm near Graettinger, where they farmed for several years. Mr. and Mrs. Stysma moved to the Jackson vicinity in 1930 and 13 years ago purchased the farm north of Jackson where they were living at the time of Mrs. Sytsma’s death. Mrs. Sytsma was a member of the Methodist Church at Jackson and had a life membership in the WSCS.

Survivors include her husband, John; nine daughters, Mrs. Ray (Violet) Sundahl, of Paso Robles, Calif.; Mrs. Walter (Helen) Davis, Terril; Mrs. Bernard (Berniece) Walsh, Spirit Lake; Mrs. Lewis (Edith) Olson; Mrs. Harold (Ruby) Weir; Mrs. Gaylord (Maxine) Foster; Mrs. Herman (Annabelle) Halanid [?]; Mrs. Howard (Bonnie) Searcy, all of Estherville; and Mrs. John (Opal) Carison of Trimont, Minn.; three sons, John Sytsma Jr. of Jackson, and Garth and Warren Sytsma, both of Hutchinson, Minn.; 34 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Also surviving are four brothers and three sisters. Mrs. Sytsma was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, one sister, and three grandchildren. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, March 8, 1960)
