William V. Sweet Dies at Age of 87
A former city councilman and longtime Estherville fire chief, William V. Sweet, 87, died yesterday afternoon at Holy Family Hospital. The death was attributed to complications of old age.Sweet was a member of the Elks Lodge, Royal Neighbors, Modern Woodsmen and the First Presbyterian Church here. He was a contractor and builder in partnership with Thomas O. Thompson until his retirement in 1931.
Funeral services are set for 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. James K. Lyon will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.
Born Dec. 18, 1874, at Sheldon, Minn., William Vernon Sweet was the son of Mr. and Mrs. James E. Sweet. He attended Sheldon schools and became a carpenter, coming to Estherville in 1901 as a builder and contractor.
He was married to Ida Wordelman here in 1903. She preceded him in death.
He is survived by one son, Edward J. of Kansas City, Mo., and two daughters, Mrs. A.D. (Lillie) McWilliams, Estherville; and Mrs. John (Pearl) Youngwirth, Kansas City, Mo.
A brother Edward resides at Mankato. Mrs. John Tillopaugh, Vegreville, Alberta, Canada, and Mrs. Frank Harrie, Chimacum, Wash., are surviving Sisters.
Friends may call at the Sternborg-Reese funeral home from noon Friday until 11 o’clock Saturday when the casket will go to the church to lie in state until time of services. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, July 20, 1961)
