Mrs. Fred Schoening Dies at 85
Mary Marie Schoening, 85, of Estherville died today at 7 a.m. at Holy Family Hospital from complications following surgery. She had been in failing health for several months.She was born Aug. 11, 1881, at Ogden to Mr. and Mrs. Henry Lakeman. She was educated in Iowa and Nebraska schools.
She was married April 17, 1902, to Ferdinand Schoening at Manning. They lived at Manning until 1920 and then moved to a farm in Jackson County, Minn. They moved in 1935 to Estherville. Her husband died Feb. 13, 1948.
Mrs. Schoening was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, the Service Star Legion, the Good Cheer Club, the Priscilla Circle, and the First Methodist Church of Estherville.
Surviving are three sons, Adolph of Lakefield, Minn., Emil of Los Angeles, and Lynn of Estherville; three daughters, Mrs. Homer (Hertha) Christ of Estherville, Mrs. John (Vera) Voth of Windom, Minn., and Mrs. William A. (Myrtle) Ridley of Estherville; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren.
Three sisters, Mrs. John Arndt of Holland, Minn., Mrs. Lena Struck and Mrs. Hannah Bartelt of Elkton, S.D.; and one brother, Henry Lakeman of Brookings S.D.
Preceding Mrs. Schoening in death were her parents, her husband, one daughter, one son, and three brothers.
Family services will be held Thursday at 1:30 p.m. in the Friendship Room of the First Methodist Church, Public services will follow in the church at 2 p.m. Rev. Raymond G. Hampton will officiate.
Friends may call at the Reese-Henry Funeral Home from 10 a.m. Wednesday until noon Thursday, when the body will be taken to the church. The casket will not be opened after the service. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, January 17, 1967)
