Herbert H. Schoening, 50, Succumbs
Herbert H. Schoening, 50, Estherville resident for 27 years, died yesterday afternoon at Sioux Falls Veterans hospital. Death was attributed to a diabetic condition from which he had suffered for a number of years.

He was born Sept. 2, 1909 [per cemetery records 1908] at Manning, the son of Fred and Mary Schoening and received his education in the Manning schools.

Mr. Schoening moved to Estherville in 1933 and was employed by the city for 20 years. Prior to coming here he had lived at Jackson and Lakefield, Minn.

He was a member of the First Methodist church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Fred Schoening, Estherville; three brothers, Adolph, Lakefield, Emil, Los Angeles, Calif., and Lynn, Terril; and three sisters, Mrs. Homer (Hertha) Christ, Estherville; Mrs. John (Vera) Voth, Windom, Minn., and Mrs. William (Myrtle) Ridley, Estherville.

He was preceded in death by his father and one sister, Dorothy.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Methodist Church, the Rev. William Noland officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery. The VFW post will conduct military services.

Sternborg-Reese Funeral Home has charge of services and friends may call from 4 p.m. Friday until 11 o’clock Saturday when the body will be taken to the church to lie in state until time of services. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, June 30, 1960)
