Mrs. F.H. Rhodes Dies; Rites Tuesday
Mrs. F.H. Rhodes, ill since 1949 when she suffered a stroke, died early this morning at her home here. Mrs. Rhodes had been confined to her home for the past four years and became gradually worse until this week when she failed rapidly.Her daughter, Lillian, who came here from Phoenix, Ariz., four years ago to care for her mother, was with her when she died.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Sternborg funeral chapel and burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.
Hattie Culver Rhodes was born – 14 [?], 1866 at Bloomington, Wis., and came to Estherville with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. L.M. Culver, early settlers in this community. Mr. Culver was station agent on the Milwaukee railroad here and the Culvers were charter members of the Presbyterian church of Estherville. Before her marriage Mrs. Rhodes taught rural school in Emmet county, often walking the 12 miles from her school to Estherville.
She was married to Frank H. Rhodes in Estherville.
She was active in civic affairs, holding offices in D.A.R. and Service Star Legion, was a member of the Presbyterian church, Woman’s club and P.E.O.
Mrs. Rhodes took an active interest in the establishment of Fort Defiance state park west of Estherville and it was largely through her efforts that the tract of land was purchased by the state for a park.
Her parents, her husband, two brothers, Roy and Fred, and a sister, Rose, a daughter, Jennie (Mrs. Arnold Moon) and a grandson, James Rhodes of New York, preceded her in death.
She is survived by two sons, Edwin J. of Houston, Texas, and Cecil of New York city, a daughter, Lillian, at home, a sister, Miss Lillie Culver of Milwaukee, two grandsons, Allan and Edwin, Jr. and a great grandson, James, of Houston. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, September 12, 1953)
