Edward Koop, 65, Dies From Heart Ailment
Retired 6 Years Ago; On Railroad 43 Years.
Edward Koop, 65, died yesterday at 4 a.m. at the home of Mrs. Florence Potter, where he had made his home for a number of years. Mr. Koop had been seriously ill for the past nine weeks. For several years he had suffered from chronic cardiac asthma.Edward Henry Koop was born May 10, 1878, in Mokena, Ill. He received his education in Minneapolis. He came to Estherville in the year of 1910, having first lived in Minneapolis and Fort Dodge. Twice married his first wife [Louisa E. Linde Koop] died in 1924 and his second wife [Florice O. Anderson Koop] died in the years of 1928.
Mr. Koop had worked on the railroad for 43 years and had been a switchman on the Rock Island railroad, with his headquarters out of Estherville, for a number of years. He retired from his work six years ago last month because of a heart ailment. He was a member of a switchmen’s lodge and of the Baptist church.
Mr. Koop is survived by one son, William, of Estherville; three sisters, two of whom reside in Minneapolis and one in California; and one nephew, Orin Manthe, of Estherville.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Mahlum and Anderson funeral chapel. The Rev. G.E. Forssell of the Baptist church will officiate. Burial will be made in Oak Hill cemetery. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, November 15, 1943)
Ed Koop, Retired Switchman, Passes After Long Illness
Edward Henry Koop, 65, well-known Rock Island employee, passed away at his home early Sunday morning. Mr. Koop had been a switchman at the yards here since 1910 but retired six years ago because of heart ailment and asthma. His condition became critical about two months ago.Born May 10, 1878 at Mokena, Ill., Mr. Koop went to Minneapolis with his family as a boy. He received his education in that city, and also resided at Ft. Dodge at one time.
He twice suffered the loss of a wife by death and in his last bereavement was left with a small son, William, for whom he has tenderly cared. Mrs. Florence Potter has assisted him in this care and kept house for the two for a number of years.
Besides the son there is left to mourn his passing a nephew, Oran Manthe of Estherville an three sisters.
Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at two o’clock from the Mahlum and Anderson chapel with Rev. G.E. Forssell of the Union Baptist church in charge. The deceased man was a member of that church. Interment was made in Oak Hill cemetery. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, November 18, 1943)
