Jay Howard, 75, Dies; Rites Set
Jay E. Howard, 75, well-known Estherville resident, died yesterday at 9:41 p.m. at Holy Family Hospital, where he had been a patient for almost two weeks. He had been in ill health for a number of years.Mr. Howard was born Dec. 27, 1883 at Forest City, attended schools there and Ellsworth College at Iowa Falls. He was married to Lora French on Sept. 10, 1909 at Estherville, and they would have celebrated their golden wedding anniversary this fall.
Before coming to Estherville he worked at Bismark, N.D., and Superior, Wis., until 1906.
After coming to Estherville, he was treasurer of the Northern Lumber Company, and in 1923 he and his brother, the late Dan Howard, purchased a grocery store which they operated for 23 years. Mr. Howard retired in 1946.
He was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church and served as a trustee for 20 years. He was a life member of the Elks Lodge, Order of the Masons, Knights Templar, served on the city council from 1936-1940, and was president and vice president of Estherville Federal Savings and Loan Association.
He is survived by his wife, three sisters, Alice Howard of Forest city, Mrs. Charles Kast of Winterset and Mrs. Arthur Beckman of Nashville, Tenn., and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were one daughter, Marian, in 1927, one brother, Dan, and two sisters, Ina and Mabel Howard.
Services will be held at the Sandin-Fuhrman Funeral Home Wednesday at 2 p.m., the Rev. James K. Lyon officiating. Friends may call there from this evening until time of services Wednesday. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, with graveside Masonic rites.
A memorial fund has been established by the family.
Pallbearers will be N.K. Brown, F.E. Rosendahl, Lester Ramsey, Glenn Story, C.W. (Bill) Robinson) and Arnold Mouritsen. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, June 22, 1959)

Howard of Des Moines, who are Mr. Howard’s niece and nephew, Edith Hogle of Blue Island, Ill., Mrs. Elmer Vallentyne of Blairsberg, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Hogle of Eldora, Mr. and Mrs..
