Richard G. Hornby Dies At Age of 80
Richard George Hornby, 80, a resident of Estherville for more than 50 years, died at 5:30 a.m. yesterday at Holy Family Hospital. Death was attributed to pneumonia. He had been hospitalized for the past four days and had been in rapidly failing health since Nov. 3.Mr. Hornby was born Dec. 28, 1880 at Sheffield, Ill. and in 1885 came to Estherville with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hornby. He received his education in Estherville schools.
In 1912 he was married to Sophia Harms at White, S.D., and the couple farmed there. Mrs. Hornby died in 1918.
In 1929 he returned to Estherville and was employed as a laborer and salesman until his retirement. He was a member of Woodmen of the World Lodge.
Survivors include one son, Kenneth, of Estherville; two sisters, [line missing] Minn.; and Mrs. Blanche Gordon, Pasadena, Calif.; and two grandsons.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two brothers and two sisters.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Sternborg-Reese Funeral Chapel, the Rev. Lester Strubhar officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from today until time of services Tuesday. The casket will not be open following the services. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, December 11, 1961)
