Mrs. Gaarde, 89, Dies at Noon Today
Mrs. Hans A. Gaarde, 89, died shortly before noon today at her home, 215 S. 9th St. Her death occurred just 17 days after that of her husband who died Oct. 24.Mrs. Gaarde had been in failing health for several years but was able to attend funeral services for Mr. Gaarde. Since that time, however, she had kept to her upstairs bedroom and gradually declined in strength.
Meta Marie Hansen was born Dec. 9, 1866 at Luaning, Denmark, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mads Peter Hansen. At the age of 14 she came to the United States with her parents and settled first in Story City.
The family next moved to a farm which Mr. Hansen purchased near Ringsted. He later purchased a second farm which became the family home. Mr. Hansen took out first citizenship papers for himself and family in Emmetsburg and in 1887 the family received final papers.
Married on Dec. 8, 1886 to Hans A. Gaarde in her parents’ home near Ringsted, Mrs. Gaarde and her husband established their first home in Emmetsburg and lived there for seven years before moving to Armstrong where they lived until 1914.
At that time they moved to Waterloo where they spent two years and in 1916 returned to Estherville where they have made their home since.
Mrs. Gaarde is survived by three daughters, Miss Emma Gaarde, Mrs. Orin (Amelia) Manthe and Mrs. Delbert (Bertha) Hinsch, all of Estherville.
She was preceded in death by another daughter, Mrs. George (Martha) Robinson, who died in January, 1954.
Funeral arrangements have not been made but will be published in Monday’ Daily News. The Sandin-Fuhrman Funeral Home has charge of arrangements. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, November 10, 1956)
Gaarde Rites Wednesday
Funeral services for Mrs. Hans A. Gaarde will be held Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Gaarde home and at 2 p.m. at the Estherville Lutheran Church with the Rev. Theodore Maakestad officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery. Active pallbearers are Eric Hansen, Julius Hansen, August Hansen, Walter Madsen, Clarence Madsen and Melvin Madsen, all nephews of Mrs. Gaarde. Honorary pallbearers are F.T. Shadle, J.B. Osher, Herman Jensen, Paul Gray, C.W. Robinson and Robert Cox. The body will be taken this afternoon from the Sandin-Furhman Funeral home to the Gaarde home where it will lie in state until time of services. Mrs. Gaarde was a longtime member of the Estherville Lutheran Church. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, November 12, 1956)
