Hans A. Gaarde Dies at 94
An Estherville resident for more than 40 years and of Emmet county for more than 60 years, Hans A. Gaarde, 94, died at his home about 6:35 a.m. today. The cause of his death is listed as an internal infection.Mr. Gaarde and his wife would have celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in December. The Gaardes had four daughters, three of whom survive.
The surviving daughters are Miss Emma Gaarde who lives with her mother in Estherville, Mrs. Orin F. Manthe and Mrs. Delbert Hinsch, both of Estherville. The fourth daughter, Mrs. George Robinson, died in January, 1954.
Other survivors include two brothers, three sisters, five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. The brothers are P.A. of Sioux City and C.A. of Rapid City, S.D. The sisters are Mrs. Mary Thompson of Sioux City, Mrs. Helena Rovn of Ringsted and Mrs. Sena Turner of Fargo, N.D.
Mr. Gaarde, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Anders N. Gaarde, was born Oct. 8, 1862, at Holstein, Scheswig, which was under Danish rule at the time of his birth but two years later was taken over by Germany.
His father’s family came to the United States in 1879 and settled first in Bellevue. They later moved to the Emmetsburg and Algona area.
Mr. Gaarde married Meta Hansen on Dec. 8, 1886 near Ringsted. Mr. Gaarde and his father took out their first citizenship papers in Algona in 1892 and received their final papers after settling in Emmet county.
Following their marriage, the Gaardes made their home in Emmetsburg for seven years. They then moved to Armstrong where Mr. Gaarde started an insurance office. He was the last living charter member of the Emmet County Mutual Insurance company.
The family moved from Armstrong to Waterloo in the fall of 1914 but in 1916 they returned to Estherville where they have since made their home. Mr. Gaarde was in the insurance business for most of his life.
He was a member of the Estherville Lutheran church and of the Danish Brotherhood. Both he and his wife were active in church work as long as their health permitted.
Funeral arrangements are in charge of Sandin-Fuhrman Funeral Home but have not been completed as yet. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, October 24, 1956)
Gaarde Funeral Services To Be Held on Saturday
Funeral services for H.A. Gaarde, 94, pioneer resident of Estherville and Emmet county, are to be held Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at the Gaarde home, 215 S. 9th St., and at 2 p.m. at the Estherville Lutheran church, the Rev. Theodore Maakestad officiating. The body was taken today from Sandin-Fuhrman Funeral Home to the Gaarde home and will lie in state there until time of services. Active pallbearers will be albert Madison, Arnold Larson, Clarence Madsen, Ray Benson, Arnold Jensen and Ervin Sabin. Acting as honorary pallbearers will be S.O. Lundy, Alex Thomsen, Henry Anderson, Joe Oakes, Peter Paulson and H. A. Balmer. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, October 25, 1956)
