Mrs. Fred Butler Dies at Age of 91
Mrs. Fred (Avis Viola) Butler, 91, Emmet County resident since 1904, died Saturday [May 25, 1963] afternoon at the farm home of her two sons, Wayne and Ralph, east of Estherville. The cause of death was attributed to complications of advanced age. Mrs. Butler had been bedfast for the past 12 years. A niece, Nettie Rauhauser, had been taking care of her for several years.

The former Avis Shannon was born July 2, 1871, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Shannon, in Wyoming, Mich. She received her education in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa schools. She was married to Fred Butler on Dec. 25, 1894, in Pipestone, Minn. Following their marriage they farmed in Black Hawk County until 1902 at which time they moved to Canada for two years before moving to Emmet County where they farmed at various areas in the county.

Mrs. Butler was a member of the Royal Neighbors Lodge, Gold Star Mothers, Service Star Legion, and the First Methodist Church of Estherville.

Surviving are three sons, Phillip Butler, Estherville; Ralph and Wayne Butler, who farm east of Estherville; one daughter, Mrs. Ernest (Mabel) Whiteford, Windom, Minn. She is also survived by three grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and one brother, Paul Shannon, Bismarck, N.D. She was preceded in death by her husband, two sons, parents, 10 brothers, and three sisters.

Family services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Reese Funeral Home Chapel followed by public services at 2 pm. at the First Methodist Church of Estherville with the Rev. William R. Noland officiating. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Reese Funeral Home from 6 p.m. today until noon on Wednesday at which time the body will be taken to the church to lie in state until time of service. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, May 27, 1963)
