Leo Brawford, 47, Dies at Iowa Vets’ Hospital
Leo W. Brawford, 47, a veteran of World War I, died Monday night in the veterans’ hospital in Des Moines from cancer of the stomach.

Mr. Brawford was born Nov. 15, 1898, in Estherville and received his education here. He was county treasurer from 1922 to 1924, and later worked for the Tobin Packing company. He worked as an income tax collector and during the war had worked with the gas tax division of the federal government. He moved to Oregon a year and a half ago and after an unsuccessful operation in Portland was transferred to Des Moines.

Those who survive him are his widow and three small children, Charles, John and Dorothy, and two daughters by a previous marriage, Mrs. W.M. Potter of St. Paul and Marianne of St. Louis, Mo., his father, J.S. Brawford of Estherville; two brothers, J.L. Brawford of Peoria and Louis Brawford of Mitchell, S.D.; and one sister, Mrs. Lloyd Schenck of Estherville. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, November 22, 1945)

Leo Wilcox Brawford, 47, died at the Veterans’ hospital in Des Moines Nov. 19, as a result of a lingering illness caused by poison gas during World War I.

Leo Brawford, son of John and Mary Brawford, was born Nov. 15, 1898, at Castalia. His parents brought him to Superior in 1901 and to Estherville in 1910. He received his education in the Estherville schools and at the age of seventeen was one of three Brawford brothers to enlist in the armed forces of the United States during World War I. He received his discharge Jan. 25, 1919, and in June of the same year he was united in marriage to Lola Austin at Peoria, Ill. Two daughters were born, Mrs. W.M. Potter of St. Paul and Marianna, now living in St. Louis, Mo. Mrs. Brawford died very suddenly in 1921 [1932]. Later Mr. Brawford was united in marriage to Ruth Dayton of Estherville and three children were born, Charles, John and Dorothy, all living at home.

Leo Brawford was a member of the Methodist church and was a member of the Maurice Doyle post of the American Legion and charter member of the John Brawford post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Those who survive him besides his widow and children are one sister, Mrs. Lloyd Schenck of Estherville and two brothers, Leonard of Peoria, Ill., and Louis of Mitchell, S.C., a twin of the deceased. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, November 29, 1945)
