Matthew Garrelts
Estherville – Services for Matthew F. Garrelts, 13, Winterset, formerly of Estherville, will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Estherville, with the interment at St. Patrick’s Cemetery. Father Patrick Nooney will officiate.

Rosary will be recited at the Fuhrman Funeral Home, Estherville, at 7:30 p.m. Monday.

Matthew was born January 25, 1968 at Ankeny, Iowa, the son of Eldon and Jessie Garrelts; he moved to Estherville, Ankeny and then to Winterset about a year and a half ago. His death was the result of a gun accident near Winterset on Friday.

He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Winterset.

He is survived by his parents; a brother Vincent; a sister, Sally; Grandmother, Mrs. Alvin Garrelts, Estherville, Grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Rasche, Estherville; several aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Alvin Garrelts. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, August 31, 1981)

Fatal Gun Accident
Winterset – a 13-year-old Winterset youth has died of injuries he suffered when a gun accidentally discharged.

A spokesman for the Madison County sheriff’s office said Mathew Garrelts, son of Mr. and Mrs. Eldon Garrelts, was shot with a .22-caliber Western-type revolver. They said the shooting took place at about 1:15 p.m. Friday at a friend’s home, located about 18 miles northwest of Winterset.

The report indicated that Garrelts and his friend were visiting when the revolver’s trigger was inadvertently pulled.

Madison County authorities said no charges would be filed. (Gazette, Cedar Rapids, IA, August 30, 1981)
