Estherville – George W. Calhan, 90, Estherville, died Tuesday at the Holy Family Hospital, Estherville.

Services for Mr. Calhan will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with Father Albert Grendler officiating. Interment will be in the East Side Cemetery.

A rosary will be recited for Mr. Calhan Friday evening at the Fuhrman Funeral Home, Estherville.

The son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Calhan, he was born September 9, 1889, near Seneca, Ill., and received his education in the Seneca schools. He also attended St. Bede’s College, Bourbonnais, Ill.

He was married to Hildegarde Coyne February 10, 1915 at Seneca. They farmed north of Gruver for several years and in 1920, moved to a farm east of Estherville, where they family resided for 60 years.

He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, and helped organize the Estherville chapter of the Knights of Columbus. He was active in the Emmet County Democratic party, and served on the Center Township election board for 25 years.

He served on the Gruver school board for several years, and was honored as a 50-year member of the Modern Woodmen of America Lodge.

Mr. Calhan is survived by four sons, Lt. Col. (Ret.) Robert Calhan, Clinton, Md., Michael Calhan, Estherville, Leo Calhan, Lumbard, Ill. and James Calhan, Long Beach, Calif.; two daughters, Mrs. Frank Fuhrman, Estherville and Mrs. Francis Murphy, Clark Air Base, Philippines; 10 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and one brother, Bernard Calhan, Orlando, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, six brothers, one sister and an infant grandson. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, August, 1980)
