Services of Friday
For Mrs. S. Strand, Who Passed Away at Local Hospital
After an illness of two months with heart trouble, Mrs. S. Strand, 80, of Wallingford, passed away at the Coleman hospital Tuesday noon. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 1:30 at the home and 2:00 at the Wallingford Lutheran church with the Rev. Hinderaker and other neighboring pastors officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside cemetery.Although she had been in poor health for the past two years, Mrs. Strand’s condition did not become serious until the past two months.
She had been a patient at the Coleman hospital for a few weeks but recently had been taken to her home where she passed away.
Gunnild Clausen was born April 23, 1861, in Freeborn, Minn. She received her education in the schools of that community and in the fall of 1886 she was united in marriage with the Rev. S. Strand at Blooming Prairie, Minn. Five years ago Rev. and Mrs. Strand celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.
The family moved to Estherville in 1899 where they lived for a year before moving to Wallingford where he served as pastor of the Wallingford and Immanuel Lutheran churches. In 1907 the family went to Madison, Minn., and Rev. Strand became an instructor in the Lutheran Normal School. He retired from active work in 1917 and together with his family, returned to their farm near Wallingford, where they have since made their home.
As the wife of a pioneer pastor Mrs. Strand led a very active and busy life. She graciously fulfilled all the duties required of her in this capacity and extended the hospitality of her home to everyone who sought it, whether they were stranger or friend, young or old. She maintained a firm conviction in her church and the principles of true Christianity, and her life was a pattern and a guiding light in the community as well as for the members of her immediate family. Never was she too busy to perform some kind deed or to give a cheery word to those who needed her assistance. Her absence from the family, church and community will be greatly noticed and her place can never be filled.
Besides her husband she is survived by one daughter, Mrs. J.M. Wolden, of Estherville, two sons, Olaf Wolden [Strand], at home, and Lauritz Wolden [Strand] of Ledyard, and four grandchildren. Three step-brothers and one step-sister also survive. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, August 14, 1941)
