Drowns at West Okoboji
Spirit Lake – an early morning swim Sunday [August 6, 1961] cost a 26-year-old local man his life. Dead is Glen Stall, who had been working in Estherville to earn money with which to complete his education.

Stall formerly lived with his parents on a farm southwest of Estherville before moving to Spirit Lake several years ago.

According to Dickinson County Medical Examiner Dr. K.L. Clayton, Stall and Mr. and Mrs. John O’Lear of West Virginia, formerly Spirit Lake, spent the evening at a night club in Arnolds Park.

About 2 a.m. Stall and O’Lear decided to go swimming in lake West Okoboji across the street from the club. Stall swam 50 or 60 yards from shore and O’Lear heard what he described as a “guttural sound.” He called, asking Stall if he was all right and received a negative answer.

O’Lear rushed to the aid of the victim. When he had been brought to within a few feet of the dock, Stall panicked and broke away from O’Lear authorities say.

John Dirks, 19, Sioux City, a water safety instructor, rushed into the lake and received the body in 7 feet of water. Artificial resuscitation was administered by the Arnolds Park emergency squad but was unsuccessful.

The body was brought to the Harpole Funeral Home here.
