Oscar Soeffing Dies at Local Hospital
Embolism the Cause of Death – Had Been Here for Operation but Was Dismissed
Oscar Otto Soeffing of Wallingford passed away at a local hospital Saturday evening of embolism , or blood clot on the heart. He had been here for an operation of varicous veins three weeks before and had been dismissed and was dressing preparatory to leaving for home. As he stooped over to put on his shoes he dropped dead.

Young Soeffing was born at Wallingford on September 21, 1887, and was therefore thirty-six years, six months and twenty-eight years [days] of age. He was a single man making his home with his mother, Mrs. Otto Shoeffing. He was a mason by trade and an ex-service man.

Because of the high esteem in which he was held in his home community he will be greatly missed there.

Funeral services are being held this afternoon at Wallingford, at one o’clock from the Adventist church and at two-thirty from the Riverside Lutheran church, and he will be buried at the Riverside cemetery beside his father who was laid to rest there thirty-two years ago. The Noris Kasa Post of the American Legion will have charge of services at the cemetery. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, April 23, 1924)

Obituary of Oscar Otto Soeffing
Oscar Otto Soeffing was born at Wallingford September 21st, 1887, died at Estherville, Iowa, April 19th, 1924, was at the time of his death 36 years, 6 months and 28 days old.

Those to mourn the loss of a dear son and brother are his mother, Mrs. Anna Soeffing; sister, Mrs. J.B. Cook of Keener, Ark.; and Mrs. R.E. Ellison, Estherville, Iowa; and Mrs. A.M. Christopher, Wallingford; brother, Albert, Wallingford, Iowa. His father, Otto Soeffing, preceded him in death 18th day of April 1892, 32 years ago. One sister, Mrs. H.M. Goddard died in California, September 21, 1923, one year ago. Oscar Soeffing entered the world war service July 21, 1918; was honorably discharged February 14, 1919.

Oscar was a kind, good hearted young man whom everybody loved that associated with him and knew him.

Funeral services were held at the home of Mrs. Soeffing, at the Advent Chapel in Wallingford, where services were conducted by Rev. McKibben. The funeral procession was in charge of the Norris Kasa Post No. 567. All the Legion members were present and made the splendid parade and guard to follow their comrade and friend and pay him the last tribute of honor. The American flag was carried at the lead of the procession from the chapel to the Lutheran church where Rev. T. Hanson conducted the funeral services.

Pallbearers were legion boys, Otis Jorstad, Curtis Larson, Selmar Dybdahl, Ingolf Ness, Gerhard Thompson and Clarence Olson. A quartette consisting of Mr. J.H. Haring, Mr. Silas O. Lundy, Gusta Skattebo and Mrs. Otis Jorstad sang some beautiful numbers both at the chapel in Wallingford, at the Lutheran church and at the cemetery as the casket was lowered.

The American Legion’s firing squad gave the salutes of farewell to their friend and comrade and the bugler sounded the tune and refrain of the last farewell.

May the good Lord give solace and comfort to the bereaved mother, sisters and brothers of him who passed to the Beyond.

Jesus can only do this for his mercy’s sake. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, April 30, 1924) (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, April 30, 1924)
