Wallingford man killed in two-car collision
Eldon R. Skattebo, 50, of rural Wallingford, was killed in a two-car accident that occurred Wednesday at 9:30 a.m., six miles northwest of Ringsted.According to the investigation report made by Emmet County Sheriff Dan Gronbeck and Terry Reekers, Skattebo was southbound on county black top N-52. A vehicle driven by Dick Mein of rural Ringsted, was eastbound on a county gravel road. Mein failed to stop for the stop sign at the intersection and the vehicles collided.
Mein was issued a citation for failure to stop at a stop sign and for failure to wear safety restraints. His 1976 Oldsmobile had $2,000 in damage.
Skattebo was driving a 1978 Datsun, which was totaled in the accident. Neither driver was wearing a safety restraint. (Estherville Daily News Estherville, IA, January 15, 1987)
Wallingford – Services for Eldon Richard Skattebo, 50, will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Wallingford Lutheran Church with Pastor Virgil Anderson officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery with military graveside rites performed by the Estherville Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3388 and American Legion Post 91. He died Wednesday, Jan. 14, as a result of an auto accident on county blacktop N-52.

Skattebo was born April 30, 1936 at Wallingford, and was the son of Loyed and Grace (Matsen) Skattebo. He attended Estherville Schools graduating from high school in 1954. He also attended Vocation School for Auto Mechanics at Ontario, Canada. Following school he joined the U.S. Army in 1954 and served in Germany during the Korean conflict. In 1958 he returned to Estherville and was employed by Lowell Johnson Plastering Co. On June 24, 1961 he was united in marriage with Lois DeMoss at Wallingford. He attended school in Canada and returned to work for Kent Mothers, Algona; later worked for Heneman Motors. In 1964 he began farming in the Wallingford area until 1968 when he started at John Morrell & Co. and continued farming. After Morrell’s closing he started work at Arts-Way Mfg. in Armstrong where he was employed at the time of his death.
He was a member of the Wallingford Lutheran Church; a lifetime member of V.F.W. Post 3388; and a member of Independent Order of Odd Fellows.
Survivors include his wife Lois; two sons Andy and Danny and his mother Grace Skattebo all of Wallingford.
He was preceded in death by his father and one brother. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, January 17, 1987)
