Estherville – Memorial services for L. Bernice Shonkwiler, 83, of Estherville will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 3, 2000 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Estherville with Pastor Paul Wiegman officiating. Interment will be held at the Wallingford Lutheran Cemetery in Wallingford. She died on Dec. 1, 2000 at McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D.

There will be no visitation prior to memorial services.

She was born on Aug. 18, 1917 in Wallingford the daughter of Lars and Karoline (Meland) Waldee.

She attended elementary school at the Violet Dale Country School. She then attended the Wallingford High School and then completed her education at the Estherville High School, graduating in 1936.

On June 21, 1941 she was united in marriage to Roger Shonkwiler at the Wallingford Lutheran Church. Following their marriage, the couple farmed southeast of Terril and then southeast of Estherville until 1945. In 1947, they moved to the house Roger had built in Estherville and have lived there ever since. She was employed at McAdam’s Clothing in Estherville for many years. She enjoyed sewing, baking, playing bridge and doing volunteer work in her spare time.

She was a charter member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, WELCA, a 50-year of the PEO Chapter AY, a charter member of the Sons of Norway Ibsen Lodge all in Estherville and the American Legion Auxiliary.

She is survived by her husband, Roger Shonkwiler of Estherville; one daughter, Kay Carpenter and her husband Delbert of Cedar Falls; three sons, David Shonkwiler and wife Sally of Madison, Wis., Richard (Dick) Shonkwiler and wife Jo Ellen of Estherville and Sam Shonkwiler and wife Kathy of Ames; 12 grandchildren, five great grandchildren and one sister, Agnes Olson of Binghamton, N.Y.

She was preceded in death by one granddaughter, her parents, two brothers and one sister. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, December 2, 2000)
