Estherville – Funeral services for Dorothy E. Rolfson, 79, of Estherville, will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 4 at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Estherville with the Rev. Dr. Linda Kersten officiating. Interment will be held at Wallingford Lutheran Cemetery in Wallingford. She died on Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002 at Methodist Hospital in Rochester, Minn.Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 3 at the Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Home in Estherville.
Dorothy was born on Jan. 23, 1923 in Estherville, the daughter of William and Anna (Peterson) Hampson. She was baptized into the Lutheran faith on Oct. 20, 1923 at Lost Island Lutheran Church in Ruthven. She received her elementary education in a rural school near Ruthven and graduated from high school from Lake Center High School in Dickens.
Later she attended college at Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and then Drake University in Des Moines. After completion of her education Dorothy first taught rural school in the Graettinger area, then Wallingford, Emmet Consolidated north of Estherville and then St. Patrick’s Catholic School in Estherville.
On March 16, 1943 she was united in marriage to Emmet H. Rolfson in Jackson, Minn. After their marriage the couple made their home in the Wallingford area where they were engaged in farming. In 1997 the couple moved into Estherville.
Dorothy’s main interests were her family, her collection of chickens, traveling to Hawaii numerous times and keeping in contact with relatives and friends by writing letters.
Emmet died Dec. 15, 1997.
She was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, American Legion Auxiliary, VFW Post 3388 Auxiliary and the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary.
Dorothy is survived by one son, Rolland “Rolly” Rolfson and his wife, Mary of Estherville; one daughter, Shelly Wedebrand and her husband, John of Estherville; six grandchildren, Kathleen, Brenda, William and Jonathan Rolfson and Lindsay and Zachery Carter; two step-grandchildren, Sarah and Brent Wedebrand; three great grandchildren, Aaron, Tyler and Macala Rolfson; one sister, Bonnie Bedient of Estherville and two sisters-in-law, Esther Rolfson of Fort Dodge and Stena Norris of Estherville.
She was preceded in death by her husband and parents. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, October 2, 2002)
