W.D. O’Brien Dies Suddenly At His Home
William D. [Dillon] O’Brien, 73, died suddenly Saturday [February 9, 1946] afternoon at his home at 21 S. Ninth street. He had been in failing health for a number of years and a stroke was reported to have been the cause of death.

Mr. O’Brien was born Aug. 17, 1872 [per WWI draft records, 1873], at Lake City, Minn. He was educated in that community and June 11, 1907, he married Martha Johnson at Crookston, Minn. They lived in Kittson county on a farm until 1911 when they moved to Iowa and settled in the Armstrong community. In 1913 the family moved to a farm north of Estherville where they lived until eight years ago when Mr. O’Brien retired.

Mr. O’Brien was a member of the Emmet County State bank board of directors for 18 years and for the past five years has been vice-president of the board. He was a member of the Order of Catholic Forrestors and of St. Patrick’s Catholic church.

Survivors include his widow, one son, Howard, of Estherville; three daughters, Mrs. Albert Heywood, Estherville; Mrs. D.H. Nutting, Cedar Falls; Pfc. Agnes O’Brien, Wright field, Dayton, Ohio; three brothers, Edward J. O’Brien, Minneapolis; Thomas O’Brien, St. Paul, and Arthur O’Brien, Lake City and two sisters, Mrs. John Barry and Mrs. George Killeen, both of Lake City, and 10 grandchildren. One son, Lloyd, preceded him in death.

Rosary was said Mon. night at 8 o’clock at the home and funeral services were held Tuesday morning at 9 o’clock at St. Patrick’s Catholic church. Father J.J. Keane will officiate and burial was in the Catholic cemetery.

Pallbearers were John Koster, Ivol Clark, W.C. Currell, D.A. Bagan, John Lilley and F.J. Kennedy. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, February 14, 1946)
