County Has First Traffic Fatality
Emmet County’s first traffic fatality of this year was recorded yesterday morning with the death of Carl Peterson, 81, rural Estherville. He died at Holy Family Hospital of injuries in a collision about three and a half miles south of here on Highway 17, Wednesday noon.Peterson’s 1928 model pickup truck and a 1962 model truck collided at a gravel road intersection with the highway. Sheriff Barney Reynolds said that the driver of the truck that collided with the Peterson vehicle, Clyde Dykhuis of Emmetsburg, told him that Peterson slowed as he approached the highway, westbound on a gravel road, then started up again and into the path of the truck driven by Dykhuis, which was southbound on the Highway.
Peterson’s truck was flipped over from the impact and came to rest upside down, pinning Peterson in the vehicle.
Family services for Mr. Peterson are scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Wallingford Lutheran Church. Public services are to follow at 2:00 p.m. Officiating at the services will be the Rev. N.L. Jolivette. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery at Wallingford.
Mr. Peterson was born July 1, 1880 in Wallingford, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ole Peterson. His education was received in the Emmet County schools.
On Feb. 21, 1907 he was married to Hattie Groth at Wallingford. He lived in Emmet County all of his life, except for 2 ½ years at Pequot Lakes, Minn. He farmed all of his life.
He is survived by one son, Harlan, of rural Estherville; one daughter, Mrs. Lloyd (Ruth) Larson of Reno, Nev., and seven grandchildren. He is also survive by one brother, Asher Peterson of Wallingford, and one sister, Roscelia Peterson, a resident of Good Samaritan Home, Estherville.
His wife preceded him in death on Dec. 24, 1961 [per cemetery records 1960]. Four brothers and two sisters also preceded him in death. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, May 28, 1962)
