Emmet County Loses Another Pioneer Citizen
Wallingford and community mourns the passing of one of its highly respected and pioneer citizens, who came to this county sixty years ago, settling on a homestead in High Lake township. Funeral services were held from the church east of Wallingford Monday afternoon and interment made in the church cemetery. A large concourse of relatives and friends were in attendance to pay their last tribute of respect to the departed.Rev. Peder Nordsletten, his pastor, has furnished this paper with the following obituary:
Edwin N. Osher, who was born in Dane county, Wis., on June 13, 1852, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Clarence Skattebo, on last Friday afternoon, Oct. 2, 1931 at 4:20 o’clock. When his traveling days were done he was 79 years, 3 months and 19 days old. Death was due to the hardening of the arteries from which he had suffered for some time; this was notices especially in the last two years of his life. In company with his parents and brothers and sisters, Mr. Osher, as a young man, 18 years old, moved westward by covered wagon coming from a distance of 300 miles to reach Emmet county. What a contrast back in those early days, 61 years ago, from the many modern conveniences which we enjoy in our present day.
At the age of 30 years, Mr. Osher married Clara Olson, a native of Norway, in Dec. 1884. This sturdy couple made their home on the farm now farmed by their son Nels Osher. Their first home was in a little log cabin. In after years, a more commodious home was erected. After having farmed for about 27 years, Mr. and Mrs. Osher decided to quit farming and thus in 1911 – 20 years ago, they built a home in Wallingford, where they resided happily together until Mrs. Osher in January, 1930, was called to heed the final summons. Since then Mr. Osher has made his home with his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Skattebo.
The married life of Mr. and Mrs. Osher was blessed with three children, Nels Osher, and Ida, now Mrs. Skatebo, both of Wallingford and Elmer of Chicago. In addition to these whom he leaves behind, he is survived by twelve grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. James Refsell of Wallingford, and a brother, Will, who is a resident of Chicago. Mr. Osher was a charter member of the Wallingford Lutheran congregation. He was known as a man who had lived an upright life and one who was much interested in the activities of the church.
A quartette composed of Miss Pearl Anderson, Miss Evelyn Clemmenson, Mr. S.O. Lundy and Mr. Fred Wolden, accompanied by Mrs. S.O. Lundy rendered fitting songs during the service. Interment was made in the Riverside cemetery. J.M. Wolden furnished the instrumental music for the processionals. The service was in charge of Rev. Peder Nordsletten, assisted by Rev. T. Hanson of Lakefield, Minn., a former pastor of the church. The pall-bearers were Arthur Henningson and Ed Rolfson of Graettinger, B.T. Osher and O.N. Refsell of Estherville and Otis Jorstad and L.B. Osher from Wallingford. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, October 7, 1931) (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, October 7, 1931)
