Estherville – Services for Leonard S. Ness, 84, of Estherville, will be held February 7, 1994 at the Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church south of Gruver, beginning at 10:30 a.m., with Pastor Virgil Anderson officiating. Interment will be at the South Walnut Cemetery, in Graettinger with full military graveside rites by the Wallingford American Legion Post 567. He died February 3, 1994 at the Dickinson County Memorial Hospital, Spirit Lake.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m., February 6 at the Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Home in Estherville.

He was born May 25, 1909 in Randall, the son of Iver and Gunhild (Stokka) Ness. He received his education in rural Twelve Mile Lake Township school. He married Anna Rassmusson on August 19, 1948 at Jackson, Minn. He then married Lillian Hyland on February 21, 1976 in rural Gruver.

In 1910, he moved with his family to Cylinder. The family moved to a farm in Emmet County, Twelve Mile Lake Township in 1916. He farmed until World War II, serving with the United States Army. After the service and his marriage to Anna, the couple farmed southeast of Estherville. She died on June 15, 1973. He moved into Estherville in 1974. After his marriage to Lillian, the couple continued to live in Estherville. He was employed by WADCO Foods in Estherville and later Graves Grain in Gruver.\

He was a member of the Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church and the Wallingford American Legion Post 567.

Survivors include: his wife; one son, Irvin C. Ness of Kansas City, Mo.; one daughter-in-law, Lynnette Ness, Kansas City, Mo.; one stepson, Allen Hyland of Romulus, Mich.; five grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Edna Ness, Graettinger, Florence Ness, Estherville and Cleone Ness of Story City and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, four brothers and three sisters. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, February 5, 1994)
