Estherville – Funeral services for Lillian I. Ness, 85, of Estherville will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 21, 1999, at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church, south of Gruver, with Pastor Jack Torgerson officiating. Interment will be at Wallingford Lutheran Cemetery, Wallingford. She died Sept. 17 at her home in Estherville.

Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Monday at the Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Home in Estherville.

She was born on Oct. 20, 1913, in Chicago, Ill., the daughter of Anton and Katinka Knutsen. She received her education in the Chicago schools and graduated from Walker High School. She was employed as a secretary in Chicago. She lived in California for a period of time and later returned to Chicago.

On Sept. 26, 1948, she was united in marriage to Alfred Hyland in Chicago. Mr. Hyland died in 1975. On Feb. 21, 1976, she was united in marriage to Leonard S. Ness at Emmanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church, south of Gruver. The couple made their home in Estherville. Mr. Ness died Feb. 3, 1994.

Lillian was a member of the Hauge Lutheran Church in Chicago and later Immanuel Lutheran Church, south of Gruver. She was an active member of the Women of the ELCA and the Women’s Auxiliary of the Good Samaritan Center in Estherville.

She is survived by her son, Allen Hyland, Berkley, Mich.; granddaughters, Corrine, Alicia and Bonnie Hyland, Lincoln Park, Mich.; step-son, Irvin Ness, Kansas City, Mo.; sister-in-law, Florence Ness, Estherville.

She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, one sister, Alice Knutsen and one brother, Arnold Knutsen. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, September 20, 1999)
