Ex-Resident of Wallingford Dies at Luverne [Lu Verne]

John A. [Andrew] Nelson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Nels L. Nelson was born on March 3, 1887 in Jack Creek township. He received his schooling in Emmet county and was a graduate of Waldorf College of Forest city.

He was baptized and confirmed in the Wallingford Lutheran church.

On April 17, 1915 he was married to Emma Egertson of Wallingford and they made their home there.

Six children were born to this union, all of whom survive. They are Norton, Downey, Calif.; John, Osage; Claire, North Hollywood, Calif.; Mrs. George (Betty) Schwart, Des Moines; Mrs. Vernon (Elinor) Baker, Corwith; and Mrs. James (Harriet) Phillips, Downey, Calif. Other survivors are nine grandchildren, three sisters, Mrs. S.T. Dybdahl and Miss Alma Nelson, Wallingford and Mrs. Helen Refsell, Robinsdale, Minn., and five brothers, L.B. Nelson and James Nelson, Wallingford; Ben, Tacoma, Wash.; Oscar, Spragueville, Ia.; and Norris, Fort Dodge.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Marie and one brother, Iver.

For many years Mr. Nelson was cashier of the Farmers Savings Bank at Wallingford. In 1933 the Nelsons moved to Parkersburg and then to Iowa Falls, in which places he worked as bank examiner. In 1940, they moved to Luverne, Ia., where he was president of the bank.

While in Wallingford, he was an officer of the Lutheran church there.

Mr. Nelson had been in good health. He suffered a heart attack at about 8 o’clock Tuesday evening, July 19 and passed away at his home in Luverne about 10:30 p.m.

Funeral services were held at the Lutheran church in Luverne, Friday at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Wittenberg in charge and the Rev. T.J. Severtson of Renwick, a former pastor of the Wallingford church also speaking.

Services were held at 2 p.m. that afternoon at Wallingford with the Rev. C.B. Gunderson in charge. Burial was in Riverside cemetery.

Pall-bearers were Hugh Bradshaw, S.O. Lundy, Oscar Peterson, Martin Oleson, Francis Skattebo and Lewis Rustad. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, July 27, 1955)
