Last Rites for Kornelius Kumle

Funeral services were held at the Wallingford Lutheran church Friday afternoon for Kornelius Kumle, 77, who was found dead last week Monday [March 20, 1950] morning in a tenant house on the Olaf Helland farm northeast of Emmetsburg. Mr. Helland was his son-in-law. The Rev. Gunderson, pastor officiated at the last rites, assisted by the Rev. V.G. Gilbertson, Cylinder. The Rev. Gilbertson conducted a short service at the Foy Funeral home at 1 o’clock.

The pallbearers were Morris Finnestad, Paul Seid, Robert Grethen, Emmet Twait, Art Juhl and Lowell Sharp. Burial was in the Wallingford cemetery.

Mr. Kumle was born in Bergen, Norway on Aug. 11, 1872. He spent the early years of his life there and as a young man entered the plumbing business. He was married to Gurine Anfindsen [Anfinson] there. The couple had only one child, Mrs. Helland. Mrs. Kumle died several years ago.

In the late 1890’s the Kumle family came from Norway to Canada. They lived there three years and then moved to Wallingford where they resided for ten years. After living in Seneca for two years, Mr. Kumle moved to the Helland farm. [Note: this varies substantially from the account in his wife’s obituary.]

For the next eleven years he made his home in a small tenant house on the farm and took his meals with his daughter’s family. Sunday evening he had his supper at the Helland house and then retired for the night. When he did not come for breakfast the next morning his daughter and family investigated and found that he had died sometime during the night. His death resulted from natural causes. His passing is mourned by many friends as well as by his family who knew him as a kind generous person.

He leaves his daughter and three grandchildren, Marian Helland, a teacher in Davenport, Orville and Gladys, at home. He also is survived by several sisters, who live in Norway. (Emmetsburg Reporter, Emmetsburg, IA, March 21, 1950)
