Louie Kohler Dies at 85

Louie J. Kohler, 85, rural Estherville resident for 20 years, died last night about 11 o’clock at Holy Family Hospital. He died shortly after he was admitted to the hospital, his death attributed to a heart attack.

Louie John Kohler was born April 1, 1880, at Elgin, the son of John and Evalina [Beer] Kohler.

At Elgin, he operated a hardware store and in 1909 he moved to West Bend and purchased a hardware store there. He continued to operate the store until 1918 when he entered the United States armed forces in World War I. While in West Bend he had served as mayor for several terms.

After returning from service he became a salesman and accountant for a grain elevator organization.

He was married Nov. 16, 1946, to Lillie Gilbertson of Estherville at Jackson, Minn. Since that year they had made their home on a farm southeast of Estherville.

As an infant he was baptized in the Lutheran faith and had been a regular church attendant until his health failed.

He is survived by his wife; a sister, Mrs. Louise Boyle, both of Estherville; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Ethel Kohler of Wilton Junction, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his first wife [Lillie May Doty Wilderman died June 1946] his parents, one brother and one sister.

Funeral services are to be at Estherville Lutheran Church with burial in the Wallingford Cemetery. The services are pending at Fuhrman Funeral Home awaiting the church pastor who is out of town.

A memorial fund has been established by relatives. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, March 8, 1966)
