Wallingford – Funeral services for Richard “Dick” Herum, 74, of Wallingford will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 27 at the Wallingford Lutheran church in Wallingford with Pastor Jack Peterson officiating. Interment will be held at Wallingford Lutheran Cemetery in Wallingford. He died on Monday, June 23, 2003 at Avera Holy Family Health in Estherville.

Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. today at the Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Home in Estherville.

Dick was born on July 17, 1928 in Estherville, the son of Raymond and Elsie (Amdahl) Herum. Dick received his education in the Burr Oak and Spring Grove country schools before graduating from Graettinger High School in 1946. After high school, he hauled cream for the Wallingford Creamery and later farmed and hauled hogs to market.

On Aug. 20, 1949, Dick was united in marriage to Effie Shaffer [Shaeffer] at Wallingford Lutheran Church in Wallingford. Dick then went to work for Golden Sun Feeds where he worked for 37 years. He worked in the mill for a few years before driving a truck and making feed deliveries for over 33 years.

Dick enjoyed camping, Blue Grass Music, doing home improvements and working on his antique John Deere tractors. He especially loved small children and being with his family.

Dick was a member of Wallingford Lutheran Church where he had served on the church council and a former member of the Wallingford town council. He enjoyed playing softball for the Wallingford American Legion town team for many years.

Dick is survived by one daughter, Evelyn Leao and her husband, David of Sioux Valls, S.D.; two sons, Steven Herum and his wife, Vicki of Marion, S.D. and Dennis Herum of Sioux Falls, four grandchildren (Kathy, Brenda, Greg and Rachel) and five great-grandchildren (Aaron, Tyler, Mcaela, Dylen and Dawson); brother, Ronald Herum and his wife, Donna of Estherville; sister-in-law Mary Herum of Wallingford and very special friends, Terry and Kelly Lundgren and their children, Seth, Alyssa and Trent of Wallingford.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Effie on June 15, 2002, his parents and one brother, Phil Herum. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, June 26, 2003)
