Wreck Injuries Fatal to Mrs. Ronald Herum
3 Others In Local Hospital

An intersection crash last night so violent that one car involved is literally smashed in pieces and the other a total loss with its engine torn out of its body brought death to Mrs. Ronald Herum of Wallingford and three others involved are all hospitalized at Holy Family with injuries.

The collision occurred about 8 o’clock three miles north on the county road which runs past the east boundary of the Estherville airport.

Driver of the Herum car was Ronald Herum, 29, and with him were his wife, 23, and daughter, Lynn, 3. Stuart Anderson, 37, of Route 1, Estherville was alone in the other auto.

Mrs. Herum died of internal injuries about three hours after the accident at 10:15 p.m. She was an expectant mother.

Herum suffered a head injury, Ann, a head injury, cuts and bruises and Anderson a broken arm, multiple cuts and bruises. All three were reported at noon by their physicians to be in satisfactory condition.

According to investigating officers, the Herum car was traveling west and the Anderson car north at the time of the collision. The tremendous impact threw the Herum car approximately 75 feet west of the intersection on the north side of the road and the Anderson car ended up in the west ditch an estimated 200 feet north of the intersection. The Herum care overturned and came to rest on its top. Investigators said all occupants of the Herum vehicle were thrown clear of the wreckage. Visibility at the intersections is obstructed by corn fields, officers said.

The accident was discovered by Paul Neppl who lives a short distance west of the accident scene. He reported the crash to Estherville police.

Mrs. Herum was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Victor L. Hansen of rural Estherville. Her parents are on a vacation trip to the east and local police were trying this morning to get in contact with them.

She is survived by her parents, her husband, daughter and two sisters, Arliss, married and living at New Hampton and Beverly at home. Mrs. Herum was a graduate of Gruver high school and was married Dec. 28, 1951. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, August 30, 1956)
