In Memory of Peter E. Herum
Peter E. Herum died at his home in High Lake, Sunday, November 10, 1895, at the age of seventy-three years, five months and six days.

Deceased was born in Norway on June 4th, 1822, and grew to manhood in his native country. He was married in 1847 to Mrs. Bertha Talle, who for twenty-five years was to him a faithful and loving helpmeet , and who died in1872, soon after the family moved to this country. Twelve children, nine boys and three girls, were born to the happy union, all but one of whom are living and were present at the bedside of their father when death came.

In 1848, Mr. Herum, with his young wife, left his native country and came to America, settling first in Dane county, Wis., where he was engaged in farming until the year 1870, when he moved to Emmet county. He settled in High Lake township, where he built up and improved one of the finest farms in the county, which he still owned at the time of his death.

Father Herum was a true and earnest Christian and had always been a devoted member of the Lutheran church. He had been in declining health for the last four years, but was able to be about until three days before his death. During those years of his rapid approach to the grave, his Christian faith, in which he found so much comfort, buoyed him up until the last – till death, apparently almost painless, death with its promise of a long and beautiful rest in the better world, came as a welcome relief.

The funeral occurred Tuesday, November 12th, and a large number of relatives and friends gathered at the old home to pay the last tributes of love and respect to the departed father, friend and neighbor. The remains were borne to the Wallingford church where public services were held at which Rev. Engh officiated in a tender and very beautiful sermon in the Norwegian and English languages. The remains were laid in their last resting place in the Wallingford cemetery.

Thus Emmet loses another from among her oldest and most worthy and respected pioneer citizens. (Northern Vindicator, Estherville, IA, November 21, 1895)
