Estherville – Services for Sherman Jerome Gunderson, 75, will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Redeemer Lutheran Church with interment in Wallingford Lutheran Cemetery, with full military graveside rites. He died Wednesday, July 5, 1989 at Veterans Hospital, Sioux Falls, S.D.Friends may call at Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Home after 3 p.m. Friday.
He was born Feb. 18, 1914 at Wallingford, the son of Albert and Helene (Egertson) Gunderson and attended Emmet County country schools and graduated from Estherville High School in 1932. On Jan. 7, 1939 he was united in marriage with Clara A. Lofglom at Wallingford. Gunderson served with the 6th Marine Division in the Pacific Theatre during W.W. II. He returned to the Wallingford area following discharge and in 1957 moved to Estherville where he was employed by Farm Bureau and Farmers Mutual Insurance Companies, retiring in 1968. He was later associated with the Fuhrman funeral Home in Estherville. He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, its choir and was head usher; a Commander of the American Legion Post 567 at Wallingford; member of Veterans of Foreign wars Post 3388, Estherville and Disabled American Veterans, Sioux Falls Chapter.
Survivors include his wife Clara, Estherville; son Gary, Estherville and son David, Eugene, Ore.; four grandchildren; one sister Mary Ann Wokasch, Cass Lake, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, July 6, 1989)
