Mrs. Sarah Gunderson, An Old Time Resident of Wallingford, Dies in Chicago
Funeral Services of Friday
Just as we go to press we learn of the death of Mrs. Sarah [Knutson] Gunderson, a pioneer resident of this county who has resided near Wallingford. Mrs. Gunderson and her family have been one of the highly respected families of the county and they have a host of friends here who will mourn the loss of this good woman. Mrs. Gunderson has been ill in the Weslian Hospital, in Chicago, for the past month and death came Tuesday [June 3, 1919] afternoon. The funeral services will be held at the Wallingford church on Friday afternoon and the remains laid to rest in the Riverside cemetery east of that city.

The obituary will be given in our next issue. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, June 4, 1919)

Mrs. Sarah Gunderson passed away last Tuesday afternoon in a hospital in Chicago from cancer of the stomach. She contracted the disease last winter and had gradually grown worse. An operation was performed a short time ago although the doctors had very little hope for a cure. At the time of her death she was 65 years of age. Mrs. Gunderson and her husband came to this county when it was yet in its swaddling clothes. They lived on a farm west of Wallingford, which she still possessed. Her husband died when the children were small, thus throwing the burden upon her in rearing the family, and also having charge of the farm. Of recent years she has made her home with her children in Chicago. Mrs. Gunderson was a most beloved friend and neighbor. Whenever any assistance was needed in the homes of the community she always helped in her kind and cheerful manner. The remains were shipped here and the funeral services were held at the Riverside church. Friday afternoon, Rev. Hanson officiating. Interment took place in the cemetery near the church. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, June 11, 1919)
