Sam Gunderson Dies Following Heart Ailment
Funeral services for Sam Gunderson were held Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. at the Gunderson home and at 2:00 o’clock at the Wallingford Church, the Rev. C.B. Gunderson officiating and the Rev. G.O. Paulsrud of Randall, Iowa, assisting. Mrs. S.O. Lundy, secretary of the congregation, spoke on behalf of the congregation. Mr. and Mrs. S.M. Berge, and Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Iverson sang, “In the Time of Trial, Lord” and “My God, How Wonderful Thou Art.” Allan Hersleff sang,”Thy Word, O Lord, Like Gentle Dew” and “The Lord’s Prayer.” Honorary pall-bearers were O.O. Anderson, Albert Wolden, C.L. Torreson, C.I. Skattebo, L.B. Nelson and Amos Egeland. The pall-bearers were John Iverson, M.G. Husby, Albert Christopher, N.J. Lee, Oscar Peterson, and O.J. Anderson. Burial was at Riverside cemetery.

Samuel Gunderson, son of Gunnar and Anna Gunderson, was born at Lodi, Wisconsin, May 1, 1872. He received his education there and began work as a carpenter. In 1897 he came to Emmet County making his home with his uncle, L.L. Gunderson. He continued his work as a contractor building many homes and also served as an officer in the church which he joined in 1901. He also had served as mayor and councilman at Wallingford. He lived at Wallingford the rest of his live.

In June, 1946, he became ill of a heart ailment and passed away at Holy Family Hospital, January 18, at the age of 74 years, eight months and 18 days. He was preceded in death by seven brothers and sisters. He is survived by one brother, John Gunderson, and one sister, Mrs. Lena Harrington, both of Madison, Wisconsin, two nieces here, Lena Gunderson and Mrs. C.F. Wolden, and one nephew, George Gunderson; also other nieces and nephews. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, January 23, 1947)

Samuel Gunderson, son of Gunder and Anna Gunderson was born at Lodi, Wis., May 1, 1872, and died Jan. 18, 1947. He was baptized and confirmed in Arlington Lutheran church near Lodi by Rev. H. A. Preus.

He began his career as architect and contractor at Lodi and Madison. In 1897 he came to Iowa, making his home with his uncle, L.L. Gunderson, and lived there the rest of his life.

He continued his work as carpenter with the exception of one year at the lumber yard at Wallingford and seven years in partnership with Oscar Myhre and M.G. Husby in a grocery store at Wallingford.

He joined the Wallingford Lutheran church in 1902 and served the congregation in many different offices of the church. He also served as mayor of Wallingford and as councilman for many years.

Mr. Gunderson was preceded in death by seven brothers and sisters. He is survived by one brother, John Gunderson, and one sister, Mrs. Lena Harrington, both of Madison, Wis.; two nieces, Lena Gunderson and Mrs. C.F. Wolden, and an nephew, George Gunderson, all of Wallingford and other nieces, nephews and cousins residing in other states. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, January 24, 1947)
