Mrs. Halvor Egertson
Mrs. Halvor Egertson, whose maiden name was Kristi Nestegaard, was born on April 7, 1850, in Hallingdal, Norway. At that place she was also baptized in the Lutheran Church and likewise confirmed in the same Christian faith. In the month of December, 1876, she was united in marriage, while yet in Norway, to Mr. Halvor Egertson, who too, is a native of Hallingdal, Norway.
Realizing that the United States would give them as a family a better opportunity than be remaining in the old homeland, Mr. and Mrs. Egertson with their two boys, Erick and Lars, decided to move to this country. Their immigration occurred in the summer of 1881, thus 50 years ago.
Mr. and Mrs. Egertson settled in the Twelve Mile Lake Township of Emmet County for 37 years. During the first years of their residence in this country, Mr. Egertson worked out until 1888 when he was able, by his earnings, to purchase an 80-acre tract of land in Twelve Mile Lake Township. Later an additional 10 acres was bought making the farm, on which Mrs. Egertson with her loved one lived for 30 years, to consist of 120 acres. Mrs. Egertson, like so many of our pioneer women, practiced thrift and economy, in her daily life that she with her dear ones should profit thereby.
During 1918 Mr. and Mrs. Egertson, as the shadows of life had begun to lengthen, moved into the town of Wallingford. Here she continued to live until last Friday, June 12th when in the early hour of that day, she succumbed to death being 81 years, 2 months and 5 days old. About two weeks prior to her death, Mrs. Egertson fell on the floor of her home and thus broke her hip. This with other ailments brought on her end.
She leaves to mourn her earthly departure her bereaved husband and her six sorrowing children, namely Erick of Albert Lea, Minn., and Lars, Gunda, Belle of Wallingford, and Helene, now Mrs. Albert Gunderson, Estherville and Emma, now Mrs. John A. Nelson of Wallingford. Mrs. Egertson is also survived by a sister, Mrs. I.S. Refsell of Wallingford and also by another sister, Gunhild, and four brothers, Ingebredt, Knut, Lars and Ole. These are all living in the vicinity of Tacoma, Wash. Mrs. Egertson is likewise survived by 15 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
The funeral service was held on Monday, June 15th, 1931. A brief service was held at the home at 1;30 p.m. while the service proper was held at the Riverside Church near Wallingford at 2 p.m. Chas. Anderson, of Estherville, directed the funeral. Rev. Peder Nordsletten officiated. He was assisted by Rev. L.A. Mathre, Estherville; Prov. S. Strand, Wallingford; Rev. A. Gaard, Cylinder; Rev. G.O. Paulsrud, Randall; and Rev. T. Hanson, Lakefield, Minn. A quartette composed of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Wolden, Miss Esther Olson and Mr. Amos Egeland sang in the church and likewise at the cemetery.
