Wallingford girl dies following car-van crash
An Estherville High School Senior, Sandi S. Bass, 18, was fatally injured in a car-van accident that happened Thursday morning while she was driving to school.

She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L.A. Bass of Wallingford and the lone occupant of a 1977 Datsun automobile which she was driving north on Highway 4.

The accident was investigated at the scene by Sheriff Dan Gronbeck and Deputy Sheriff Gary George, and occurred at 8:21 a.m.

Also injured in the accident was Donald J. Peterson, 63, of Estherville, who was driving south and was also alone in a 1977 Dodge van owned by Jensen Stores of Estherville. Peterson is a carpet layer for Jensen’s.

The accident happened on a curve of Highway 4 about four miles southeast of Estherville at the intersection with County Blacktop A33 and was caused by an accumulation of slush on the highway surface, Sheriff Gronbeck said. Wet snow was falling at the time of the mishap, which was reported to be 8:21 a.m.

As the two vehicles approached the curve, Gronbeck said, the slush caused the Bass auto to cross the center line of Highway 4, forcing it into the path of the oncoming van and resulting I the collision of the two vehicles.

The van came to a stop in the ditch on the west side of the highway; the Bass auto remained on highway surface. The accident was witnessed by Gary Nissen of Wallingford. Nissen had been following one of the accident vehicles, Sheriff Gronbeck said.

Bass was removed from her car and taken by Estherville Community Ambulance to Holy Family Hospital where she died later in the morning.

Peterson was also taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries he received. He was reported in serious condition Friday after being described in critical condition Thursday. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, April 23, 1988)
