Died – At Osgood, on Saturday, April 23, 1899, from injuries received while shoeing a horse on the preceeding Thursday, Harley W. Barnum in the 39th year of his age. Mr. Barnum was born near Ackley, Hardin Co., Iowa, and since arriving at the age of manhood has followed the trade of blacksmithing. He had been living in Osgood about two years, and was a man of steady habits, a good citizen, faithful husband and a kind and indulgent parent. He leaves a wife [Clarissa Josephine Wonch] and four small children to mourn his untimely death, and to fight the battles of life alone, without the aid of his strong and willing arm. It is a sad incident of the uncertainty of life, as he was to within three days of his death, seemingly , a strong and robust looking man. Mr. Barnum had the foresight to provide for his family in case of death, as he was a member in good standing in the Modern Woodmen of America. (Graettinger Times, Graettinger, IA, April 27, 1899)
