Chris Egeland, 87, died at 6:50 p.m. yesterday at the Good Samaritan Home here. Death was attributed to lingering illness coupled with old age.
Mr. Egeland was born March 9, 1873 [per cemetery records, 1872] in Bergen, Norway. Coming to the United States at the age of 18, he settled in Story County as a farm hand.
In 1896 he was married to Carrie Moe and they farmed in Story county near Roland until 1907 when they moved to Emmet County.
After farming west of Wallingford for 24 years, the Engelands [Egelands] returned to Roland where Mr. Egeland worked in the Marshall Canning Co. for the next 13 years. During World War II, he moved to Vancouver, Wash., to work in the Kaiser shipyards for 18 months.
Upon returning to Iowa, the couple lived at Fenton for six years until Mrs. Egeland died in 1952. Then Mr. Egeland resided with his children until becoming ill six years ago. He became a resident of the Good Samaritan Home in July, 1956.
Five children survive: Mrs. Ellen Roesen and Mrs. Inga Roesen of Vancourver, Wash.; Clarence of Estherville; Amos of Wallingford; and Mrs. W.M. DeWall (Myrtle) of Fenton.
A brother, John, lives at Billings, Mont. There are 13 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren.
His wife, one son, Iver, and a brother, Theodore, preceded Mr. Egeland in death.
