Estherville – Services for Don Carlson, 70, Estherville will be held Friday, February 3 at Grace Lutheran Church in Spirit Lake at 1 p.m. with Pastor Jame Quitno and Father Tom Nash officiating. Interment will be at East Side Memorial in Estherville with military graveside services by VFW Post 3388 and American Legion Post 91 of Estherville. He died Monday, January 30 at 14 Orchard Lane in Estherville.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Home in Estherville.

He was born April 26, 1924 in Sommers, the son of Ralph B. and Albina M. (Federick) Carlson and attended school in several different towns in Iowa and Minnesota, graduating from Bode High School in 1942. Following graduation he was employed by the Government Printing Office in Washington, D.C. He served for three years with the U.S. Navy during World War II. After the war, he married Ida Elizabeth Timmerman on April 6, 1947 at Sibley and worked for Rock Island Railroad for 37 years. During that time, the family lived in manly, Sibley, Sioux Falls, and Elkton, S.D., Lester, Lake Park, Estherville, Council Bluffs, Omaha, Neb., and Worthington before retiring in 1983.

He served as Quartermaster of the VFW in Estherville for two years. He also transported vehicles for Motor Inn in Estherville and Spirit Lake during the past several years. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Spirit Lake, the American Legion and the VFW.

He is survived by his wife of Estherville; one son, James of Spring Valley, MInn.; two daughters, JoAnn E. Webb of Bellevue, Neb.; Patricia M. Jensen of Des Moines; six grandchildren; one great grandchild; one sister, Eleanor Haukoos of Conger, Minn.; and one brother Eugene Carlson of Knoxville.

He was preceded in death by his parents. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, February 1, 1995)
